Victim

The archetype on the flight pole of the DOT model. Not a verdict on who you are: a position the body stands in when staying small feels like the only way to get through what's coming. These emotions aren't proof you're broken. They're signals. Maybe you were hurt and no one believed you. Maybe you're overwhelmed and frozen. Maybe your needs were ignored, again. This is a moment to tend, not to justify.

Creator

Deepen

Victim is Flight energy: the pull to leave, to go anywhere but here, sometimes genuine helplessness rather than a choice. Deepen means staying with that pull instead of judging it.

Orient

Orient means all six counter qualities coming alive at once (Trust, Curious, Open, Give, Hold, Pause), not one chosen in isolation. Curious is Flight's most direct entry point, the same axis as Victor's Open from the opposite pole. The practice is holding the pull to leave and its counter together, before the mind picks a side.

Transform

With Curious available, the same flight becomes the Creator: what was buried becomes what's growing. Its symbol is the flower, which can be crushed and still offer its best.

Where it sits

Victim sits on Flight, one of four threat archetypes on the DOT model's wheel alongside Villain (Fight), Victor (Fix), and Vicar (Freeze). Where Villain pushes outward for control, Victim pulls back and away, retreating from a world that feels unsafe to face head-on. Use this guide to return to your agency, not to perform strength, but to remember your wholeness.

What it feels like

A cascade, not a switch. Each stage is the same signal, louder.

A call for clarity or space

Shows up when something grates on your boundaries or expectations. Body clues: shallow breathing, jaw tension, twitchiness.

Grief for what happened, or didn't

May mean something has gone too far. Body clues: heaviness in limbs, lump in throat, tearfulness.

Survival kicking in

Can come from being overwhelmed, caught off guard, or retraumatized. Body clues: racing thoughts, urge to escape, jitteriness, rapid heartbeat.

When this fire is right

Needs to be seen as powerless

Ask: what are other perspectives I may be missing here? How do I share my needs differently? Give yourself permission to retreat and return. Needing to be seen as powerless isn't weakness performing itself, it's a real signal that something overwhelmed your capacity, and pulling back is how you protect what's left.

The shift: from Victim to Creator

Creator's gold symbol, a layered flower-heart shape

The symbol of the flower, because flowers can be crushed and bruised and harmed, but what's in the middle is the hope for the future, heart. Seed the change you wish to be in the world.

Body sensations: grounded spine, protected front body, gaze that softens and scans. Remember, you are allowed to need safety. Orienting here is not a luxury, it is a practice of reclaiming dignity. Ask: what would it look like to honor my own timing? What do I need to feel safe enough, not totally safe, just enough, to take the next step? Can I protect myself without shutting down completely? This is about sovereignty, not isolation. Orienting means seeking support from those who can witness your suffering and growth. Timing is everything when we try to heal, look for the window of least resistance and give yourself permission to mindfully flee and return.

Steps:

  1. Ask: "What needs to be known, or named?"
  2. Use non-violent communication (NVC) → to clarify: Observation, Feeling, Need, Request. Its own tool, worth spending real time with.
  3. Retreat if needed. You don't have to respond right away. Time is part of your toolset.
  4. Recenter around dignity. You're not here to be palatable. You're here to be whole.

Am I responding or reenacting?

What would reclaiming my power look like, without needing to control?

One more thing

If the meddler shows up (someone trying to get you to accommodate your harmer), redirect the conversation. You might say: "I'm not available to re-engage without repair. If you want to be helpful, support them in making amends. Don't pressure me to bypass my healing." Give them better questions to ask you instead: "What do you need in order to feel less alone?" "How can I advocate for your boundary with them?" "What does safety look like for you right now?"

You are not fragile. You are fierce. And the boundary you hold now is the foundation of what you get to build next.

In the model's own words

This page is a written companion. The full DOT model asks and answers this out loud, voiced, at the point the model builds Victim and, later, Creator. Reflected here in the same voice, not a literal transcript.

What kind of person flees? Through a not enough lens, we would call them the Victim, or the Target. The one who becomes overwhelmed and retreats to survive. Irritation, then sadness, then terror. The DOT Model
What does flight become? The Creator. The one who takes the retreat and makes something new from it. Distance as beginning, not as ending. The DOT Model

The Victim, across real situations

Real moments this archetype shows up in, one at a time, in the same spirit as the Villain page's own situations.

Where this comes from
